The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned of an imminent shutdown of universities across Nigeria if the Federal Government fails to address long-standing issues within 14 days.
In a statement signed by its President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the University of Abuja on Sunday, September 28, 2025, the union accused the government of consistent neglect of public universities and the welfare of lecturers.
ASUU recalled that in August, it had staged rallies across campuses to highlight the plight of universities, but lamented that those efforts yielded no tangible government response.
If the ultimatum lapses without action, the union said it would embark on a two-week warning strike as a prelude to a possible total and indefinite shutdown of universities nationwide.
The union’s demands include:
•Renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement
•Sustainable funding and revitalisation of universities
•End to alleged victimisation of members at LASU, Prince Abubakar Audu University, and FUTO
•Payment of outstanding 25–35% salary arrears
•Resolution of delayed promotion arrears spanning over four years
•Settlement of outstanding third-party deductions
“These issues are not new,” Prof. Piwuna stressed, noting that ASUU has been engaging the government repeatedly without results.
