Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri Resigns from PDP Amid Growing Wave of Defections

Daily Lens Report

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), deepening the crisis rocking the opposition party.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, via a statement posted on Facebook. According to Alabrah, the governor’s resignation also included 23 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, marking a major political shake-up in the state.

While Governor Diri has yet to disclose his next political destination, the move follows growing speculation about his alignment with emerging political forces. In May 2025, SaharaReporters revealed that 27 of his aides were dismissed after attending the inauguration of The NEW Associates, a grassroots political movement that publicly declared support for President Bola Tinubu and FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

Diri’s exit from the PDP comes barely 24 hours after Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, also dumped the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC). Mbah, during a televised announcement, cited the need to align with the APC’s “vision for development and progress,” defecting alongside former Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and several lawmakers.

Governor Diri’s resignation signals a widening exodus from the PDP as top figures across the South-South and South-East regions continue to reassess their political loyalties ahead of the next electoral cycle.
