Senate Confirms Prof. Joash Amupitan as New INEC Chairman

The Senate has confirmed Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

His confirmation followed a two-hour screening session in the upper chamber of the National Assembly, Abuja, where lawmakers engaged him on key issues relating to election management, policy implementation, and the Electoral Act.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier nominated Professor Amupitan for the position, seeking the Senate’s approval to replace Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure recently expired.

Tinubu’s request for confirmation was conveyed in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary session.

With his confirmation, Professor Amupitan officially assumes leadership of the nation’s electoral body, which is expected to oversee upcoming off-cycle and general elections.
