BREAKING: Senate Shifts Date for Resumption of Plenary

The 10th Senate has once again adjusted its legislative calendar, pushing back its resumption from September 23 to October 7, 2025.

An internal memo signed by Chinedu Akubueze, Chief of Staff to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, confirmed the shift, apologising to lawmakers for the late notice. The two-week extension stretches the chamber’s annual recess, which began on July 24.

Although no official explanation was provided, insiders told PUNCH Online that the move was designed to give senators ample time to fully observe Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations on October 1st.

The latest delay means that critical debates and pending motions—including oversight on government expenditure and key executive confirmations—remain frozen until October.

This marks the second time the Senate has altered its resumption date since adjourning in July, a decision initially framed as “chamber reciprocity” with the House of Representatives.

With the extended recess, questions are already being raised within the National Assembly about the mounting backlog of legislative business.
