Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the ongoing demolition of buildings reportedly owned by Igbo residents in Lagos State.
Speaking on Friday during the commissioning of projects in Aba, Abia State, Kalu urged the President to prevail on the Lagos State Government to adopt a more accommodating approach that allows affected property owners to regularise their documents instead of losing their investments.
“Our hearts bleed when we see the destruction of the houses and offices of our brothers in Lagos,” Kalu lamented. “Mr President, I plead with you to appeal to the governor of Lagos State to allow our people to rectify their documents rather than demolish their properties in these difficult times.”
Kalu, however, commended President Tinubu for his reforms and fiscal policies that have increased funds available to states through the removal of fuel subsidy.
“I want us to give credit to whom credit is due. The President has ensured that states receive more resources instead of keeping everything in Abuja,” he noted.
The Deputy Speaker also called for the establishment of a seaport in the South-East, stressing that such infrastructure would stimulate trade, enhance logistics, and boost regional economic growth.
“Developing a seaport in the South-East is vital for our people’s business ecosystem and for Nigeria’s economic balance,”Kalu added.
