Makinde Urges PDP Members to Stay United Amid Defections, Says Party’s Troubles Are Temporary

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has called on members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) not to despair over the recent spate of defections, assuring them that the party’s current difficulties are only temporary.

Speaking in Abuja on Monday during the inauguration of the PDP National Convention Transportation Subcommittee, which he chairs, Makinde said the party’s challenges will ultimately strengthen it and prepare it for future victories.

He urged members to remain steadfast and focused on rebuilding the PDP into a formidable national force, stressing that unity and resilience are key to reclaiming the party’s lost glory.

The governor’s remarks come amid an exodus of prominent figures from the PDP. In recent months, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Senate President David Mark, and Dele Momodu have aligned with the African Democratic Congress-led opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.

Meanwhile, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has also drawn in PDP heavyweights, including Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno, Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and the party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, Ifeanyi Okowa. There are also reports that Enugu Governor Peter Mbah and Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri may join the APC before the PDP’s National Elective Convention scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Reaffirming his optimism, Makinde said, “PDP belongs to every part of this country — from the Northwest to the Southeast. They may claim otherwise, but I assure you that PDP remains in every ward across Nigeria.”

He added that while the road ahead may be tough, the party will emerge stronger and ready to reclaim its place in Nigeria’s political landscape.
