Nigeria advanced to the CAF playoff final after a thrilling 4-1 extra-time victory over Gabon on Thursday in Rabat, setting up a decisive clash with the winner between DR Congo and Cameroon for a spot in the intercontinental playoff.
The Super Eagles took the lead in the 78th minute when Akor Adams punished a defensive error with a composed finish. Gabon hit back late through Mario Lemina’s deflected strike in the 89th minute, forcing extra time after a tense 1-1 draw in regulation.
Nigeria regained control in extra time, with Chidera Ejuke restoring the lead in the 97th minute from Wilfred Ndidi’s assist. Victor Osimhen then sealed the win in style, netting twice in quick succession — a sharp angled finish in the 102nd minute and another composed strike in the 110th — to make it 4-1.
Coach Finidi George’s tactical substitutions, including the introductions of Onyeka, Awaziem, and Ekong, helped Nigeria maintain their dominance and defensive solidity. Despite late efforts, Gabon couldn’t find a way back.
With this emphatic victory, Nigeria now stand just one step away from the intercontinental playoff — and potentially, a return to the FIFA World Cup stage.
