Bafana Bafana have officially booked their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a commanding 3–0 victory over Rwanda at the Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday. The win, combined with Nigeria’s 4–0 triumph over Benin Republic, ensured South Africa finished top of Group C to qualify automatically.
South Africa made a dream start, taking the lead in the 6th minute through Thalente Mbatha, who fired a superb strike into the top corner from the edge of the box. The hosts doubled their advantage in the 27th minute when Appollis latched onto Modiba’s cutback, making no mistake on the rebound to put Hugo Broos’ men firmly in control.
Despite an injury setback to Thapelo Morena late in the first half, Bafana Bafana maintained their dominance and went into the break with a 2–0 lead.
In the second half, Appollis continued to torment the Rwandan defence, and his fine delivery from a corner in the 72nd minute was expertly headed home by Evidence Makgopa to seal a resounding 3–0 victory.
Rwanda offered little resistance as South Africa controlled possession and dictated the tempo throughout.
The result sends Bafana Bafana to the 2026 World Cup — their first qualification since 2010 — marking a major milestone for coach Hugo Broos and his rejuvenated squad.
“This team has shown great character and maturity,” Broos said after the match. “We deserve to be at the World Cup, and I’m proud of every player.”
Fans in Mbombela celebrated wildly at full-time, waving flags and chanting as South Africa secured their place among football’s elite once again.
