The Council of State is scheduled to meet in Abuja on Thursday, October 9, 2025, according to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.
A statement from the Office of the SGF indicated that the meeting will be held in a hybrid format — combining physical and virtual participation — at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Also slated for the same day is a meeting of the Police Council, which will likewise take place at the State House.
The Council of State, Nigeria’s highest advisory body to the President, is composed of all living former Heads of State and Presidents, former Chief Justices of Nigeria, and all state governors. The body provides counsel to the President on matters of national importance, including the endorsement of key appointments such as that of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen, Akume said the meetings would address critical national issues, particularly security and policing.
“The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, CON, has extended an invitation to members of the Council of State and Police Council to a hybrid strategic meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 9, 2025,” the statement read.
According to the Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Affairs Office, Dr. Emanso Okop Umobong, the sessions aim to deliberate on key matters affecting national security and governance, reflecting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to tackling pressing national challenges.
Thursday’s gathering will mark President Tinubu’s second Council of State meeting since assuming office. The first, held on August 13, 2024, was attended by former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and the late Muhammadu Buhari, during which participants expressed confidence in the administration and discussed crucial national issues.
